Deep-Diving Swimming Pools

Swimming pools are hands-down one of the most highly sought-after amenity at a hotel or experiential hospitality property, and today I'm diving into some creative options (pun intended).

We all love water. And we all love pools.

We're all familiar with traditional concrete pools. Old news. Yet that's what almost all the traditional hotels and resorts resort to. I smell opportunity...

Let's have a pool that adds some character and charm—that sets the stage for an experience!

Here are some options to think about:

Natural Swimming Pools: I love these because they effortlessly blend into the landscape. Immersive on so many levels! These pools use plants and natural filtration systems to create a chemical-free swimming environment, enhancing the connection with nature. The Cliffs at Hocking Hills is an extraordinary example of how to do this (and attract hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of extra dollars in sky-high rates and demand). My friend Hans wrote about these in his incredible design newsletter recently (which you should read), and he linked this as a helpful resource.

Container Pools: A modern, sustainable, and cost-effective option, container pools offer a sleek, industrial vibe that fits seamlessly into both urban and rural settings. They're made from upcycled shipping containers, durable and stylish, and can be made and installed quickly and efficiently (mine took 2 months from the day I ordered). Perfect for anyone looking to make a bold statement with a minimal environmental footprint. This is what we chose for Live Oak Lake, as I wrote about in this post. Huge hit!

Infinity Pools: Of course, you can always go for that unbeatable sense of luxury and awe with an infinity pool that appears to extend into the horizon, blurring the lines between the pool and the surrounding landscape. These are particularly powerful in properties with stunning views. Ben Wolff pulled this off at his recently-opened Onera Wimberley (actually not a true infinity pool but achieves the same effect at a lower price point and uses water more efficiently, with much less evaporation).

Plunge Pools: If space is tight, or if you want to offer each accommodation its own pool, go with one of these. They're designed for quick dips but still make a huge design impact, and they're energy efficient, too. Plunge pools are becoming a major trend, and I’m here for it! Soake and Plungie are both great choices for prefab options.

I'm personally in love with plunge pools...

Heating Options

To extend the swimming season (not imperative—we skipped this at Live Oak Lake), you'll need to dial up a heating system. A few options to consider:

  • Traditional Heaters: Gas and electric heaters offer reliable and efficient heating, keeping comfortable water temperatures even during cooler months. Expect to spend between $2k and $5k upfront, with monthly operating costs in the range of a few hundred dollars.

  • Solar Heating: For a sustainable, cost-effective option, solar heating is interesting. These systems typically cost $3k-$7k upfront, but with almost no operational costs, they're an eco-friendly long-term solution.

  • Geothermal Heating: While geothermal systems have higher installation costs ($10k-$20k), they're incredibly energy-efficient and reduce environmental impact. Could add some story and marketing value to your property, too.

Filtration Systems

A clean and hygienic swimming environment is essential, but consider stepping up your game with Ozone and UV Sanitation. These advanced filtration systems cut down on the need for harsh chemicals like chlorine, making the swimming experience more natural and gentle.

Another option to consider is saltwater filtration. Saltwater pools use a natural process to generate low levels of chlorine from salt, maintaining water clarity while being far easier on the skin and eyes. There’s a growing number of guests who are sensitive to traditional chemicals and will value these alternatives.

Both of these provide superior sanitation, and a great educational and story opportunity for those who haven’t experienced them yet... another way to stand out.

Other Considerations and Ideas

  • Privacy and Views: Position your pool thoughtfully to offer privacy while maximizing views of the surrounding scenery.

  • Enhancing Ambiance with Lighting: Create a magical after-sunset and nighttime vibe with underwater lighting, string lights, and/or pathway lighting that illuminates the pool area and beyond.

  • Sounds of Tranquility: Add to the sensory experience with carefully curated background music or the calming sounds of a nearby water feature.

  • Comfortable Seating and Lounging: You want plenty of seating—loungers, daybeds, shaded cabanas—so guests can relax, socialize, and soak up the ambiance. Invest in comfortable and stylish pool furniture that withstands the elements and complements the overall design (both really important!)

One version of it all coming together... (I love those lights!)

Just like any aspect of experiential hospitality, the success of your pool area hinges on meticulous attention to detail. Everything, from landscaping to furniture, should enhance the guest experience and fit seamlessly into your property's aesthetic.

Parting Thoughts on Practicalities

Maintaining your pool to perfection is paramount. And don't forget to check with your insurance provider to understand any rate impact. Ours required us to post standard "no lifeguard on duty," pool rules, and depth signage, and added around $1,000/year. Honestly not bad at all.

Lastly, be sure to incorporate storytelling into the design and marketing of your pool area. Share the inspiration behind the design, highlight unique features, and use compelling visuals to showcase the poolside experience. This is one of the biggest opportunities to create and cue up instagrammable moments for your guests, and you can't afford not to nail it.

But I know you will. And I'm always here to help brainstorm or aim that hammer with you if you need it :)
